On Thursday, July 2, 2015 the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission awarded the contract to build a casino in the southeast gaming zone. The commission confirmed the Lottery Gaming Facilities Review Board’s earlier decision by approving Kansas Crossing 3-0, with an abstention by board member and Wichita Attorney David Moses.
The $70 million project is to be built at the crossroads of Highway 400 and U.S. 69, just south of Pittsburg. It will feature 625 slot machines, 16 table games, a 123-room hotel, three restaurants and a 600-seat entertainment center.
Groundwork began on Friday, July 3, 2015. It is stated, on the Kansas Crossing Facebook page, that the new casino development will be within 12 months.
The casino is the last of the four, state-owned, but privately operated casinos, that was approved in the 2007 law. The others are Kansas Star Casino & Resort in Mulvane, Hollywood Casino & Resort in Kansas City, and Boot Hill Casino & Resort in Dodge City. Under the law the fourth casino was to be built in either Cherokee or Crawford counties.
The state will receive 22 percent of the revenue and county and city governments will receive a total of 3 percent, and gambling and addiction programs will receive 2 percent. The 3 percent from Kansas Crossing will be 1 percent to Crawford County as the host county, 1 percent to Pittsburg as the host city and 1 percent to Cherokee County as the other county in the gaming zone.
